How it works
This tool runs an AI segmentation model entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly no photo is ever sent to a server. The model analyzes the image to identify the main subject versus the background, generates a mask around that subject, and exports a PNG with everything outside the mask made transparent. The first time you use the tool, your browser downloads the model itself (a few tens of megabytes); after that it's cached, so later images process much faster.
What kind of photos work best
Product photos on a plain background, portraits, and any image with a clearly defined subject against a simpler backdrop tend to produce the cleanest results. High-contrast edges between subject and background a person in a solid-color shirt against a wall, a product on a white table give the model the clearest signal to work with.
Realistic limitations
Like any automated segmentation tool, this one isn't perfect. Fine, wispy details loose hair strands, fur, semi-transparent fabric, or lace are the hardest thing for any background removal model to cut cleanly, and edges there may look slightly soft or have small artifacts. Cluttered scenes, subjects that closely match the background in color, or low-contrast lighting can also produce a rougher cutout than a plain studio-style photo. For most everyday uses this is a non-issue, but for print-quality or highly detailed work, a manual touch-up in an image editor afterward may still be worth it.
Common uses for background removal
Removing a background is one of the most requested edits for online sellers preparing product photos for a marketplace listing, for profile pictures that need a plain or transparent backdrop, for creating stickers or cutout graphics from a photo, and for compositing a subject onto a new background in a design project.
FAQ
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No everything happens locally in your browser using an on-device AI model. Your photo is never sent to a server.
What file format do I get back?
A PNG file with a transparent background, ready to drop onto any new background or use as-is.
Why is the first image slow?
Your browser needs to download the AI model the first time you use the tool. After that, it's cached by your browser and later images process noticeably faster.
Why does the result have rough edges around hair or fur?
Fine, thin details are the hardest thing for any background-removal model human or AI to separate cleanly from the background. Photos with simpler, high-contrast subjects give cleaner cutouts than ones with lots of fine detail at the edges.
Does this work on photos with multiple people or objects?
It generally keeps everything the model identifies as the foreground subject, which can include multiple people or objects if they're all part of the main subject area. Results vary more on complex multi-subject scenes than on a single clear subject.
Do I need an internet connection for this to work?
You need an internet connection to load the page and download the AI model the first time. The photo processing itself happens locally, but the page and model still need to load normally over your connection.
