Which barcode format should I use?

CODE128 is the most flexible it can encode any letters, numbers, and most symbols, making it a good default. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the standard formats used on retail products and require exactly 13 or 12 digits. CODE39 is common in logistics and inventory systems and supports uppercase letters, numbers, and a few symbols.

Will this scan with a real barcode scanner?

Yes these are standard, scannable barcode formats generated using the same encoding rules real scanners expect. Just make sure you use the correct format and digit count for your use case (for example, don't use EAN-13 for arbitrary text).
