What is a good CPS score?

Most people click at around 5-8 clicks per second (CPS) using a normal, relaxed single-finger click. Competitive clickers using techniques like jitter clicking (rapidly vibrating your forearm muscles while holding the mouse) or butterfly clicking (alternating two fingers rapidly on the same button) can reach 10-20+ CPS, sometimes higher with practice. There's no universal "perfect" score it depends heavily on technique, hand size, and the mouse itself.

How CPS is calculated

CPS is simply your total number of clicks divided by the test duration in seconds. This test starts timing on your very first click, so you don't lose any time getting ready, and it stops automatically the instant the countdown reaches zero, so the final click right at the buzzer still counts.

Where CPS testing comes from

Click-speed testing became widely popular through Minecraft's PvP community, where clicking speed directly affects combat attacking faster than an opponent can literally decide a fight. That popularity spread CPS tests far beyond Minecraft into a general benchmark gamers use to compare click speed for any fast-paced game, and into a mild internet challenge in its own right, with people posting screenshots of high scores.

Does your mouse affect your CPS score?

Yes, more than most people expect. Gaming mice with lighter, shorter-travel switches register clicks faster and more consistently than older or cheaper mice, and some gaming mice even include a "hyper-click" or debounce-adjustment feature specifically to register faster repeated clicks. If your CPS score seems unusually low compared to how fast you feel like you're clicking, testing with a different mouse is a reasonable way to rule out a hardware bottleneck.

FAQ

Does clicking with different fingers change my score?
Yes alternating fingers, jitter clicking, or butterfly clicking (rapidly alternating two fingers on the same button) can all produce higher CPS than a single-finger click.

Is this test accurate on mobile?
Yes tap the click area with your finger the same way you would click with a mouse, though touchscreen results are usually a bit lower than mouse-click results.

Why did Minecraft make click speed so popular?
In Minecraft's PvP combat, attack speed is tied directly to how fast you click, so a higher CPS became a genuine competitive advantage, which is a big part of why CPS testing became a widespread benchmark among gamers.

Can my mouse limit my CPS score?
Yes some mice have hardware or firmware limits, like debounce delay, that cap how quickly repeated clicks register, so switching mice can noticeably change your measured score.

Is a high CPS score bad for my hand?
Aggressive techniques like jitter clicking sustained over long periods can contribute to hand or wrist strain for some people, so it's worth taking breaks rather than repeatedly maxing out effort in back-to-back tests.

Should I test for 5 seconds or 10 seconds?
Short 5-second tests tend to produce higher peak CPS since fatigue hasn't set in yet, while 10-second tests give a more realistic picture of sustained click speed try both to see the difference.
