Gas Cost Calculator
Estimate how much gas will cost for any trip, based on distance, your car's MPG, and the price per gallon.

How trip gas cost is calculated
The math is two steps. First, divide your trip distance by your vehicle's miles per gallon to get gallons needed: 250 miles 28 MPG = 8.93 gallons. Second, multiply that by the price per gallon to get total fuel cost: 8.93 gallons $3.50 = $31.25. Cost per mile ($0.125 in this example) is just the price per gallon divided by MPG a useful number for comparing trips or vehicles independent of distance. Don't know your car's exact MPG→ Our MPG Calculator works it out from a recent fill-up using your actual miles driven and gallons pumped.
Why real-world MPG varies from the number on the window sticker
This calculator uses a single MPG figure you provide, but MPG itself isn't a fixed number it changes with driving conditions. City driving with frequent stops and idling typically returns lower MPG than steady highway cruising, because a gas engine is least efficient at low, inconsistent speeds. Highway speeds above roughly 60-65 mph also reduce MPG due to aerodynamic drag increasing with the square of speed. Cold weather, underinflated tires, a roof rack, and a heavy load (passengers, cargo, a trailer) all lower it further. The EPA combined estimate on a new car's window sticker is a blended average of city and highway testing, and most drivers see somewhat lower real-world numbers, especially in winter or heavy city traffic.
Getting a more accurate trip estimate
If your route is mostly highway, use your vehicle's highway MPG rating rather than the combined figure for a tighter estimate. If it's a mixed trip city driving to the highway and back a rough approach is to calculate the city and highway portions separately with their own MPG figures and add the two fuel costs together, rather than using one blended number for the whole trip. For a round trip, just enter the full round-trip distance rather than doubling a one-way result afterward.
What this doesn't include
This is a fuel-cost-only estimate. It doesn't account for tolls, parking, food, lodging, or vehicle wear like tire and oil life, all of which add to the real cost of a road trip. Fuel is typically the single largest variable cost on a long drive, but rarely the only one worth budgeting for.
FAQ
Where can I find current gas prices?
Gas price tracking apps and sites like AAA's fuel price map or GasBuddy show current average prices by state, city, or even specific nearby stations, which is more accurate than using a national average.
Does this include tolls or other trip costs?
No this calculates fuel cost only. Add tolls, parking, food, and lodging separately for a full trip budget; fuel is usually the largest single line item but rarely the only one.
What MPG number should I use if I don't know my car's exact figure?
Check your vehicle's window sticker or manufacturer specs for an EPA combined estimate, or use our MPG Calculator to work out your actual figure from a recent fill-up. Your real-world MPG is often a bit lower than the EPA estimate, especially in city driving or cold weather.
Why did my actual fuel cost end up higher than this estimate?
MPG isn't constant it drops in stop-and-go city traffic, cold weather, with a heavy load or roof cargo, or at highway speeds above about 60-65 mph due to increased aerodynamic drag. If your trip includes a lot of city driving or mountain grades, use a lower MPG figure than your highway rating for a more realistic estimate.
How do I estimate cost for a round trip?
Enter the full round-trip distance (there and back) rather than the one-way distance, and everything else works the same. Doubling a one-way estimate after the fact gives the same result.
Does a smaller or more fuel-efficient car always cost less to drive?
For fuel specifically, yes higher MPG directly lowers cost per mile in this calculator's formula. But total cost of ownership also includes insurance, maintenance, and depreciation, which don't always favor the most fuel-efficient option, so fuel savings are only part of the picture.
