How to measure your foot for shoe size

Stand on a piece of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, then measure the distance from the wall to the mark in centimeters. Measure both feet in the afternoon (feet swell slightly during the day) and use the larger measurement, since most people have one foot slightly longer than the other.

Why US, UK, and EU sizes don't line up neatly

Each sizing system grew out of a different historical measuring convention rather than a shared global standard. EU sizing is based on the "Paris point," where each size step equals roughly 6.67 mm of foot length a system that scales fairly consistently across the whole range. US and UK sizing both use a similar barleycorn-based increment (about 8.5 mm per size) but start counting from different base points, which is why converting between them isn't just a fixed offset across every size. This is also why shoe size charts, rather than a simple formula, are the most reliable way to convert between systems.

Sizing still varies by brand

Even with a chart, shoe sizing isn't perfectly standardized between manufacturers a US size 10 in one running shoe brand can fit noticeably differently than a US size 10 in a dress shoe or a different brand's sneaker, because last shapes (the foot-shaped mold shoes are built around) vary by brand and by shoe category. Use this chart as a reliable starting point, but check a specific brand's size guide or read reviews mentioning fit before buying shoes you can't try on first.

FAQ

Why do US and UK sizes differ by more than a whole number?
US and UK shoe sizing both use similar increments, but they start counting from a different base point, so a UK size is typically about 0.5-1 size lower than the equivalent US size.

Are men's and women's sizes the same scale?
No for the same foot length, a women's US size is typically about 1.5 sizes higher than the equivalent men's US size.

How accurate is the at-home paper-and-wall measuring method?
It's accurate within about half a size for most people, which is precise enough for online shopping. For a more exact fit, especially for narrow or wide feet, an in-store Brannock device measurement (the metal foot-measuring tool) accounts for width as well as length.

What does EU shoe sizing actually measure?
EU sizes are based on the Paris point system, where each full size represents about 6.67 mm (two-thirds of a centimeter) of internal shoe length which is why EU sizes use larger numbers (like 42 or 43) than US or UK sizes for the same foot.

Should kids' shoe sizes be converted the same way?
No children's shoe sizing uses a completely separate numbering scale from adult sizing in the US and UK systems, so this chart (built for adult sizing) shouldn't be used for kids' shoes.

Why do my feet measure as one size but I wear a different size comfortably?
Foot length is only part of fit width, arch height, and a brand's specific last shape all affect how a given size feels. Chart-based sizing gets you close, but trying a shoe on (or checking a brand's returns policy) is the only way to confirm true fit.
