How unit price is calculated
Unit price is simply a product's total price divided by its quantity price per ounce, per sheet, per count, or whatever unit applies. Comparing unit prices, rather than sticker prices, tells you which size or brand is actually the better value, since bigger packages aren't always cheaper per unit.
Why does the bigger size sometimes cost more per unit?
Retailers sometimes price "value" or "family" sizes at a higher per-unit cost than the standard size, especially during sales on the smaller size. Checking the unit price often printed in small text on the shelf tag is the only reliable way to know for sure.
FAQ
Do the quantities need to be in the same unit?
Yes this calculator just divides price by quantity, so both products need to be measured the same way (both in ounces, both in count, etc.) for the comparison to be meaningful.
Can I use this for more than two products?
This tool compares two at a time. For more, calculate each product's unit price separately and compare the numbers.
