How to use this hours calculator

Enter the start and end time for each shift you worked, plus any unpaid break time in minutes. Add as many shifts as you need great for totaling a full week's timesheet at once. If you enter an hourly rate, your total pay is calculated automatically too.

Built for timesheets and payroll

This calculator is designed around how hourly work actually gets logged: a start time, an end time, and an unpaid break, repeated for each shift in a pay period. Add one row per shift a full workweek is usually five rows and the running total covers every shift at once. If you bill or get paid hourly, entering your rate turns the total straight into an estimated paycheck, without needing a separate spreadsheet.

What if my shift crosses midnight?

Shift work often crosses midnight a shift that starts at 10:00 PM and ends at 6:00 AM the next morning is common in healthcare, security, hospitality, and manufacturing. This calculator detects that automatically: if the end time you enter is earlier in the clock than the start time, it assumes the shift rolled over into the next day and calculates the duration accordingly, rather than returning a negative or incorrect number.

Decimal hours vs. hours and minutes

The total is shown both ways because different systems expect different formats. "7h 30m" is easier to read at a glance, but most payroll software and pay-rate math expects decimal hours 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50, not 7.30. Using the wrong format is a common source of small payroll errors, so this calculator always shows both side by side.

What this calculator doesn't handle

It totals raw hours and, if you provide a rate, multiplies by that rate at a flat amount it does not apply overtime multipliers, shift differentials, or minimum-break requirements, since those rules vary by employer, industry, and jurisdiction (and in the U.S., by state). Use the total as your base figure and apply your employer's specific overtime or premium pay rules on top of it.

FAQ

Is my timesheet data saved anywhere?
No everything is calculated locally in your browser and never sent anywhere. Once you have your total hours, use our free paycheck calculator to estimate net income.

Does this account for overtime rules?
No this tool simply totals your hours and pay at a flat rate. Overtime rules vary by employer and jurisdiction.

How does it handle a shift that crosses midnight?
If your end time is earlier than your start time, the calculator assumes the shift continued into the next day and adds 24 hours before calculating the duration so a 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift correctly totals 8 hours instead of a negative number.

Why does it show both "7h 30m" and "7.50 hours"?
Because different tools expect different formats payroll software and hourly rate math use decimal hours, while a written timesheet is usually easier to read in hours and minutes. Showing both avoids conversion mistakes.

Can I subtract unpaid breaks automatically?
Yes enter the break length in minutes for each shift, and it's subtracted from that shift's total before the hours are added up.

Can I calculate a full week's timesheet at once?
Yes add one row per shift you worked. For annual salary calculations, check our free salary calculator to see how hourly rates translate to yearly income. (up to seven for a standard week, or more if you worked multiple shifts in a day) and the total covers all of them combined.
